Sophora microphylla (kowhai)
Sophora microphylla, commonly known as kowhai, has a somewhat tangled juvenile form before growing into a tree of about 3-7m. It grows in open forests and on riverbeds throughout New Zealand. The foliage is fern-like with very tiny light green leaflets paired along the leaf stem. In spring the tree is covered with its beautiful bright yellow flowers. The juvenile stage of this tree can last for more than 10 years and it doesn’t flower during this time. Cuttings from an adult tree will bypass this stage.
