Planet & Eco-Leadership
St Highway 20/1 is the connection between St Highway 1 motorway with State Highway 20 at Manakau, through to Pununi Rd. This is the off ramp to Auckland international Airport. The landscaping was designed to integrate with the existing landscape that flanked the motorway corridor at the time of planting as well as adding some plantings of amenity species to create aesthetic appeal. This design is largely cultural with the use of native New Zealand phormium, cabbage trees and Pohutukawa.
In addition there is a major storm water system that is intertwined in this motorway corridor. This consists of a series of large storm water catchments that take in the run off from the surrounding urban and commercial areas along with the road run off. It is treated through an engineered wetland system that biologically removes nitrogen, phosphorus, and heavy metals with the use of wetland plants.
This project has established well and the wetland system is a great success. This is an important project due to the fact that it is the southern gateway to New Zealand’s largest international airport.
